Under his direction, he was instrumental in transforming the publication into a dynamic resource for teachers and parents. He skillfully shifted the magazine’s focus, which had previously featured primarily association-centered content, to include engaging articles containing practical education information.
Salwen continued his educational editing work through 1999. As Interim Managing Editor of Scholastic, Inc., he helped shape the content in Scholastic’s national magazine, Instructor. Read by K-8 teachers and education specialists, this publication gave Salwen a broad understanding of the myriad of challenges facing the education profession, including classroom management, testing strategies, and race-related issues.
It was during a stint as an English teacher at New York’s Beacon High School when Salwen realized that for him, the classroom was more confining and the world was more compelling.
