Ethan G. Salwen is a talented photographer and writer with a passion for recording our extraordinary world on film and with words. He brings a distinctive brand of sensitive creativity to every client and project—compassionately researching and documenting the human condition at home and abroad. His early experience as an educational editor and teacher prompted his decision to become a research photojournalist. In this platform, he excels in exploring our vast landscape of people and places with eye toward balance, hard-hitting accuracy, understanding.

Beginning in 1994, as Editor of Catalyst, Salwen launched this DC-based newsletter for The Adhesive and Sealant Council. The following year he was offered the position of Editor-in-Chief for National Head Start Association’s national magazine, Children and Families.

Under his direction, he was instrumental in transforming the publication into a dynamic resource for teachers and parents. He skillfully shifted the magazine’s focus, which had previously featured primarily association-centered content, to include engaging articles containing practical education information.

Salwen continued his educational editing work through 1999. As Interim Managing Editor of Scholastic, Inc., he helped shape the content in Scholastic’s national magazine, Instructor. Read by K-8 teachers and education specialists, this publication gave Salwen a broad understanding of the myriad of challenges facing the education profession, including classroom management, testing strategies, and race-related issues.

It was during a stint as an English teacher at New York’s Beacon High School when Salwen realized that for him, the classroom was more confining and the world was more compelling.
