Ethan’s truest passion is travel. But for Ethan travel is not about stepping foot on new ground. Travel is a concept. It is about pushing one’s self to experience new facets of life, and to try to understand those facets with as open and sensitive mind as possible. As Ethan tries to satisfy his deep curiosity about a wide range of cultural ideas he also tries to push his own comfort level—mentally, physically, emotionally.

To all of the big, standard questions you might want to ask Ethan about his belief systems, his religion, his politics and so on, his answer is: “Humanist.” What other way is there to go? Like one his heroes, the late, great writer and humanist Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., Ethan believes that the only possible response to the madness and apparent meaninglessness of existence is embrace human kindness. To quote the title character of Vonnegut’s novel, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater:

“Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies—‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.’”
