Q: Well, what do you think of what you do know about our town, based on what you have seen?

EGS: I love San Francisco. I really do. And frankly, this surprises me. Not because I was expecting to dislike San Francisco. But because I am a devout New Yorker, and before I moved here I thought that I would never live anywhere else in the outside of New York. I could see myself living in number of other countries, and I love to road trip and camp and backpack and travel throughout the U.S. But I had no plans on leaving New York.

Q: So are you one of these people who can’t exist outside Manhattan?

EGS: Actually, when I say New York, I really mean the city and the country. I grew up in Upstate New York, in the Hudson Valley, in a very rural area about 90 miles north of the city. So I actually started out as a country boy, raised on a horse farm. But my parents were from the city, and I always had a strong association with Manhattan. And after going to school and spending most of my adult life in the city, I was definitely a ‘New Yorker’.

Q: And you’ve found a new love in San Francisco?

EGS: Absolutely. Not a replacement, of course. But right now I very much see myself as always having a place in San Francisco. I love the clean air, the cool temperatures, the lack of muggy humidity, and the fact that it’s a driving town—I love to drive. I’m also completely enamored by the Bay. I’ve got a buddy with a 44-foot sailboat, and we go out all the time, year round, in any weather. It’s so incredible to have this amazing, dynamic body of water almost completely to ourselves. There’s just no way to beat coming back in from the ocean, passing the rugged walls of the Marin Headlands, spotting the World War II bunkers that pepper the hills, and then sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge which is on fire from the setting sun.
