Writing
For the past five years my specialty has been to research and write diverse content for professional image makers. My topic coverage is wide, including artist profiles (my favorite), imaging techniques, business and marketing strategies, the creative process, digital workflow, industry trends and blogging.
I am a regular contributor to Rangefinder, AfterCapture, The Picture Professional (ASPP) and Currents (NANPA). I’ve written many features for the ASMP Bulletin, and contributed four chapters to “ASMP Professional Business Practices in Photography, 7th Edition” Since AfterCapture was launched in January, 2007, I have written the magazine’s “Raw Processing Solutions” column, digging deep into the technical aspects of the raw digital imaging workflow, but focusing on making the information approachable.
Since the spring of 2008 I have blogged professionally in my “On Photography” blog for AfterCapture. Recent credits include United Airline’s Hemispheres magazine, PhotoWorld China, Expressions, Insight, and two chapters in “Digital Stock Photography: How to Shoot and Sell.”
I am fascinated by what makes people tick, as well as the technology we are using to create and share images. Photography in the 21st Century is a fascinating topic because the Average Joe has access to (and uses!) technology that professionals couldn’t even dream of when I went off to photography school 20 years ago. The photographer’s most important tool: The World Wide Web.
While my regular editors sometimes ask me to write specific articles, I typically generate the ideas for my pieces, pitching them to appropriate publications. This works well, as it keeps me totally invested in each project and ensures that I am producing the most relevant material for each specific audience.
Before going solo as a journalist, I gained invaluable experience working on almost every aspects of magazine publishing as an in-house editor. After launching a newsletter for a Washington D.C. trade association, I worked in educational publishing for four years: for three years as editor-in-chief of Children & Families, magazine of the National Head Start Association, and then as a senior editor of Scholastic’s Instructor magazine.
Having begun my career as an in-house editor, I am an editor-friendly writer who understands how to deliver exactly what is needed.
